Registration of Overseas Entities Bill: What does it mean for London property?

Opaque offshore structures holding UK real estate assets is a problem that has plagued the market and become increasingly prevalent over the last few years. Generally, the public can only see information about the name of an entity and its origin, but the new bill will make it much clearer who owns and controls that entity and therefore who is responsible for its ownership of property assets in the UK. The benefits are countless but, perhaps most importantly, the law will go much further to prevent foreign investors using our market as a place to launder criminal proceeds. It is our firm belief that this increased transparency will have a wholly positive effect on the market and bring about assured confidence and ethics in our country’s real estate.
